As the flowers bloom and the weather warms up, students at John F Kennedy High School are shedding their layers and stepping into the vibrant world of spring fashion. Students are bringing a fresh wave of trends that reflect not just the changing climate but the unique and trending styles that come with it.
Jazmin Gutierrez, senior at Kennedy, has embraced her fashionable sense of style throughout her four years at Kennedy, “My go to spring outfit will probably be a cute summery top, pastel colors, with a cute denim skirt, and some docs or sambas, for school at-least. It can seem basic, but it’s really cute!”
Students have realized that having “basics” can really improve their styles. “Some really important and easy basics can be as simple as plain tops, either tanks or baby tees, or baby doll shirts, a pair of jeans, some shoes, and jewelry,” said Gutierrez.
Bailey Rodriguez, junior at Kennedy, has a Tik Tok account, in which she gives “OOTDs” (outfit of the day), where she shows her style and her getting ready for the day. “With spring and summer coming up, I am looking forward to wearing all the bright colors. Pink, orange, yellow, lime greens etc. I’m mostly excited about these colors to go with my summer tan!”
Many students at Kennedy have a variety of styles, whether it’s gothic, simple, coquette, and many more. Alyssa Fua, senior at Kennedy, is also known for her ideal style that she wears. “Some basics that I love especially in spring are definitely detailed or graphic tank tops. You can pair them with pretty much any bottoms,” said Fua. “I also love layering with a cute lace cover up or vest. Anything with a cute pair of boots is perfect as well.”
Not only do students focus on the base of the outfit such as a shirt and pants, students also express their variety of outfits by accessorizing. “I’ve learned over the years trying to find out what I like. It doesn’t matter how basic your outfit is because that’s why you have accessories!” said Gutierrez. “I’d probably wear bangle bracelets, a cute watch, a necklace and hoops, maybe even a cardigan to accompany the outfit and boom! You’re ready for an OOTD”.
Recently, a lot of fashion trends from decades ago have been making returns in some styles. “I admire how low rise jeans have been popularized again. I also personally really like the look of fur being incorporated into outfits,” said Fua.
Fashion trends nowadays are often found from inspiration from other creative ideas found on apps such as Pinterest, Tiktok, Instagram, etc. Students at Kennedy have embraced the different styles and trends that have spiked up during that season, and some like to mix it up.
“I believe fashion and the development of certain trends helps us be whoever we want to be, and that’s why I love it!” said Gutierrez. “One day I can wear an outfit as if I lived in the 2000s, the next day I can be boho/western, I can be a sports fanatic, or dress in all black baggy clothes. It’s the fact that you can dress in whatever trend or aesthetic you want is what I admire.”
Aside from staying put on the current trends that are hot in the community of fashion within teenagers, some students may feel self-conscious about being able to express themselves fully or by stepping out of their comfort-zone.
Kennedy students have been seen with a variety of different styles and cultural inspiration for their outfits which has created a diverse community throughout Kennedy. “Even if you feel out of place, dont, because although someone may look at you crazy, there’s another person who’s looking at you in admiration,” said Gutierrez. “So be the someone who inspires others to wear that one piece they won’t dare to, the someone who doesn’t care what other people say, the someone who is dressing for themselves and not for others because subsequently, that will help you develop your own sense of style in fashion.”
People may have different opinions about wearing what they want to wear, just because of opinions from their peers. “I would really emphasize that you should wear what you like. It’s important to feel confident with what you wear and you shouldn’t care about what other people think,” said Fua.
“I used to be scared about what others would think if I wanted to change up my look and try something new. One day I just did it and it turned out to be my best decision yet,” said Rodriguez. “I’ve gotten told by others that I’ve inspired them to branch out and it makes me so happy!”
The up-and-coming fashion trends for the spring season are all about fun and self-expression. Stepping out with confidence and letting your wardrobe reflect your personality with either the old trends, or creating new ones, can always intrigue conversations and develop a community at Kennedy.
