The rhythmic echo of drums and the bright melody of brass instruments fill the air every Friday night at Kennedy, where the marching band sets the tone for major events. Under the direction of Wilber Ibarra, the band aspires to become more than a musician group; it desires to be the heartbeat of the school’s spirit.
Whether performing at football games, pep rallies, or community parades, the Kennedy Marching Band always takes center stage. Their presence brings an unmistakable energy that motivates athletes, excites students, and unites the crowd in shared pride.
Wilber Ibarra, who leads the program, says his goal is to make music a source of connection for students. “It’s not just about perfecting a routine,” he explains. “It’s about giving students a place where they belong and can express themselves.”
Every performance is a product of weeks of hard work and dedication. From early morning rehearsals to late night practices before competitions, the band members learn discipline, teamwork, and perseverance that carry beyond the field.
The marching band’s commitment to excellence has also earned them recognition in local competitions. Their synchronized movements, precise formations, and strong musicality have helped Kennedy stand out among other schools in the area.
Band members agree that the experience is both fun and deeply meaningful and that band has opened doors to new friendships and leadership opportunities. Members often describe the group as a second family, where everyone supports each other through both challenges and celebrations. A lot of people can agree on this like Marvin Garcia, a senior who’s been in band since sophomore year, who says that, “being in band has been one of the best experiences I’ve had in high school. It taught me how to work hard, stay confident, and trust the people around me.”
Beyond the music, the marching band’s influence spreads throughout Kennedy High School, encouraging students to get involved and show school pride. Seeing their classmates perform with pride encourages others to join clubs, sports, or other creative programs strengthening the school’s sense of community. As Wilber Ibarra puts it, “We may play the notes, but it’s the spirit of the students that makes the music come alive.”
