The Best Halloween Costume

Vanessa Aguilar, Staff WriterIt’s that time of year where ghosts and ghouls come out to play. People spend both time and money to dress up, each with their own twists and turns. Everyone comes dressed to impress or rather just witness the halls fill with unrecognizable students. These are just a few of the best costumes Kennedy students, staff, and I have seen roaming the hallways. Although most costumes reach out for scares, one of the best Halloween costumes I have encountered was an inflatable gremlin costume. This was something unlike I have seen before, and it appears that a few of my peers, such as Christina Marin, agree. It’s fun and easy, but also generates a far funnier twist. While Kennedy outlines no inflatable costumes or masks to be worn, this costume crosses that line. Although the costume itself is not for Kennedy’s guidelines, it sure was let under the radar by its charm and love for these beloved characters. This goes to show that humor and cuteness can go a long way when it comes to selecting a Halloween costume. As famously stated by Phineas from Phineas and Ferb, “Ferb, I know what we’re gonna do today!” Yup, that’s right, Phineas from Phineas and Ferb joins the party. While easy outfit wise, what had made it pop was the head itself. Keeping the spirit and effort alive through designing a triangular head. What had also helped uplift the costume was having his best friend and brother by his side, Ferb! Together it made a powerful costume duo and blew any competition out of the water. It’s a good reminder that Halloween costumes are often enhanced when coordinated in a group. There are also costumes that hit peers with waves of nostalgia. Pete the Cat is one of the most beloved childhood book characters, but have you ever seen someone fitted to be him on Halloween? Brianna Lopez, a Kennedy senior, has and reflected, “It was creative and unlike anything I had seen before.” I have yet to see a costume of Pete the Cat, but only one can imagine what it takes to put such a costume together. Yet there are simpler versions to make this idea come to life. The ability to tap into nostalgia will surely send people back in time and bring a smile to their faces, likely generating lasting memories as well. Kennedy High School teacher Kristopher Li stated that he had once seen a Jack in Box costume stroll the hallway. “It was both a funny costume in itself, but it was funnier that the kid had to hold the head because it covered his whole head.” This was a costume of commitment and definitely some whimsy and could have possibly also made some people realize they were hungry. A few of the other well loved costumes were La Muerta from the Book of Life as described by Donna Verdugo, Santa Clause stated by Brissa Ruiz, and Dory favored by Aaliyah Espinola. All that’s left is to see how this year’s Kennedy students and staff are going to blow everyone out of water. October 27, 2025
