John F. Kennedy High School has implemented a new way to get lunch, with a verification system to see who is getting their lunch by scanning or punching in their lunch code.
Kennedy has had a consistent lunch system for quite a while: get your lunch, punch in ‘9’ and leave, with some students to come back and get more without a peep. But this can no longer happen, as Kennedy, or to be more specific, LAUSD has decided to be more strict with their system.
Kids can no longer get seconds by sneaking through the lines undetected; they now have to pay a fee of $6.00, in cash, if they would like to get seconds.
Many have been very confused by this new system at first launch, which has caused much longer lines in Kennedy’s lunch system with a lot of errors with people not knowing their codes or not having their IDs, which in turn causes a lot more mayhem in the cafeteria.
With such a change many students have wondered “why?” Even the staff here at Kennedy started to wonder. “I’m not sure why they would change it, it has been quite busy,” says a Kennedy staff member. who serves students lunch everyday. “I’m sure things will settle down after a few weeks” they assure.
With LAUSD implementing a new system for student’s lunch systems, the district’s hope is for a more organized lunch system with saving in food and knowing who ordered food, which can be useful in certain situations.
Many students don’t seem to oppose the new lunch system, “I don’t really care to be honest — as long as I get my lunch I’m fine with it.” says Ricky Colindres, a junior at Kennedy.
